Growing a lemon tree, such as kagzi, seedless, and Thai varieties, is manageable. By meeting their basic needs, cultivating lemons can be a rewarding experience.

    Description for Nimboo, Lemon:

    Plant height: 24 – 36 inches

    Plant spread: 5 – 9 inches

In India, citrus is the third-largest fruit industry in terms of area under cultivation, following banana and mango. When you grow a lemon tree in a pot, keep in mind that container lemon trees will not grow as large as those planted in the ground.

The requirements for growing lemon trees in containers closely resemble those of ground-grown lemon trees. Ensure that the pots have good drainage by including drainage holes. Tending a small lemon tree in your home can create a delightful aromatic experience. Although growing a tree indoors may seem daunting to beginners, it's easier than it appears.

    Common name(s): Nimboo, Limboo, lime

    Bloom time: annual

Max reachable height: 2 to 6 feet.

    Difficulty to grow: Easy.

    Planting and care:

Citrus trees thrive in warm or mild climates. They can tolerate cool conditions as long as frosts are not severe. In colder zones, only container versions should be grown, so they can be brought inside a greenhouse or enclosed porch during extreme cold. Citrus needs full sun, so position them in the sunniest part of your garden or balcony. Pots should have drainage holes and be slightly elevated off the ground. Water potted citrus trees two to three times a week, and possibly daily in very hot weather. Apply citrus food in small amounts monthly from August to mid-autumn.

    Sunlight: Full sun, Partial sun

Soil: Citrus orchards flourish in light soils with good drainage properties. Deep soils with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5 are ideal.

Water: Regularly water them about once a week in hot weather.

Temperature: Citrus fruits grow best between 13°C to 37°C.

Fertilizer: Feed them fertilizer often (at the drip line, rather than near the trunk).

    Caring for Nimboo:

Citrus trees need a warm or mild climate zone. As long as frosts are not severe, citrus trees will tolerate cool conditions. In cold zones, only grow container versions so they can be brought inside when temperatures drop significantly. Citrus requires full sun, so place them in the sunniest area of your garden or balcony. Ensure pots have drainage holes and are elevated slightly off the ground. Water potted citrus trees two to three times a week, and possibly daily in hot weather. Apply citrus food in small amounts monthly from August to mid-autumn.

    Typical uses of Nimboo:

    Special features:

Culinary use: The oval fruit is widely known for its juice. The pulp and rind are also used, primarily in cooking and baking. Lemon juice is acidic, making it a cost-effective and readily available acid for educational science experiments. It is used to create lemonade, soft drinks, and cocktails.

Medicinal use: In Ayurvedic medicine, it is believed that a cup of hot water with lemon juice every morning helps tonify and purify the liver.

How to Grow a Kagzi Baramasi Lemon Tree

Lemons are more sensitive to cold than all other citrus trees. Because of this cold sensitivity, lemon trees should be planted on the south side of the home to ensure they receive adequate sunlight. Additionally, lemon trees need protection from frost to thrive. If you're considering expanding your garden, you might also explore planting teak saplings alongside your lemon trees, as both require specific care for optimal growth. A lemon plant nursery can offer grafted lemon plants to help you get started.
